Rail Freight

HANSON HAS restored the railway sidings at its Ashton-in-Makerield plant near Wigan, enabling the site to receive aggregates trains from the company’s quarry at Shap in Cumbria. GB Railfreight is operating three trains per week, hauled by its recently acquired Class 60 locomotives. The irst service ran on 15 October, and the material will be used by Hanson’s asphalt and concrete plants as well as to supply the construction market. The deal marks the irst time trains have run into the depot for some 10 years, and Hanson is also upgrading the depot, including installation of a new weighbridge and oice facilities.
