Condition-based maintenance is all the rage. And it’s easy to see why – it can yield increased maintenance intervals, less frequent replacement of key components, and overall reductions in costs and improvements in fleet safety. Bombardier is leading the way in this area with its Automatic Vehicle Inspection System (AVIS). This scans trains as they enter depots, with the data then processed and aggregated with additional data sources through Bombardier’s ORBITA Predictive Asset Management system. Works orders are then automatically raised through a third-party system, MAXIMO. Will Lanoe, Bombardier’s Technology and Digitalisation Manager, is keen to emphasise that while the scanners installed at depots are the visible element, the integration between these three elements to create the end-to-end process is key.
