The first of Avanti West Coast’s 13 five-car Class 805 trains is undergoing static testing at Hitachi Rail’s Newton Aycliffe factory.
AWC has ordered 13 of the bi-mode trains for the London-North Wales corridor, with a further 10 electric seven-car trains for operation between London, the West Midlands and Liverpool. They will replace 20 five-car Class 221 Super Voyager trains on the West Coast main line.
While under static testing, all basic functionality of the train including engines and brakes will be evaluated before dynamic testing where the train moves under its own power begins.
The first of the Class 805s is due to enter service from early 2023.
