AWC to axe Shrewsbury – Euston trains

WMT Nos 170504/533 wait at Shrewsbury with the 12.41 to Birmingham on 16 May 2022.

Avanti West Coast is to axe its two Shrewsbury – Euston trains at the June timetable change.

Modern Railways understands the decision to drop services to Shropshire – which will have no direct trains to the capital after June – was ordered by the Department for Transport. A recent bid to provide an open access service between Shrewsbury and Euston is awaiting approval.

Since the Covid pandemic, Avanti has only operated one of the two trains from Shrewsbury to London: the paths will be retained between London and Birmingham.

West Midlands Trains is set to run a second hourly train between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton, which with connections to AWC London trains is said to offer comparable journey times.
