One of the pleasures of travelling through Paddington these days is the reduction in the assault on my nose and ears as electric replaces diesel. By next January, the Great Western terminus is set to be all-electric (save for one early morning DMU working to Greenford and the Sleeper). Of the top 10 stations for usage (Table 1):

■ two are all-electric (Victoria and Liverpool Street);
