CONTRASTING FORTUNES FOR THE REGIONS

Retired railway manager THEO STEEL compares regional rail growth to population and economic growth trends

The Office of Rail and Road recently published its 2015/16 report on rail use by region in England, Scotland and Wales. Overall the number of rail journeys was up 5.1% on the previous year at 1.464 million – the figure is lower than that quoted for the system passenger journey totals as some journeys in the regional statistics are aggregated. It is important to note that over the 20-year span considered there are some changes of methodology in the figures, as more details of journeys have been automated.
