Engineers have completed installing the deck beams on the Highfurlong Brook viaduct – the first on High Speed 2 to reach this stage of construction.

The 163-metre-long bridge near Aston le Walls in Northamptonshire consists of seven spans crossing the brook at a height of around nine metres. The beams were manufactured off site before being delivered overnight and craned into place. The deck and parapets will be installed in 2024.

It is one of 50 major viaducts on the railway and one of 15 being built by the Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall joint venture, which will also build the earthworks at either end.

Elsewhere on the railway, the first concrete has been poured on the approach viaducts at Birmingham Curzon Street and the first beams installed on the Thame Valley viaduct near Aylesbury.
