FUNDING HAS been confirmed for a study into resolving gauge clearance issues on the Eaglescliffe to Northallerton route, where low bridges and tunnels restrict the size of containers that be carried.
The line is used by containers between Felixstowe and Teesport, but the largest containers are unable to use the line and must instead take a detour via Darlington. The £1 million study will be jointly funded by Network Rail, which is contributing £750,000 through its Strategic Freight Network, and the Tees Valley Combined Authority.
