Passenger services between Ebbw Vale and Newport resumed on 1 February for the first time in more than 60 years.

Thirty trains a day run between Newport and Ebbw Vale after capacity enhancements on the line including extension of the passing loop between Crosskeys and Aberbeeg and provision of a new platform and lifts at Newbridge and Llanhilleth stations. It was funded by a £70 million Welsh Government loan to Blaenau Gwent council. A further £17 million signalling upgrade on the southern end of the line was delivered by Siemens.

Passenger services on the Ebbw Vale line resumed in 2008 after closure in 1962. More than a million journeys were made in the first 18 months of the new service.
