FIRST TRAINS TO EAST MIDLANDS GATEWAY

A TEST train operated into the East Midlands Gateway Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) just before Christmas, with regular services starting from early January. The terminal at Castle Donington is operated by Maritime Transport. The 17-acre SRFI will be capable of handling up to 16 trains, 775 metres long, daily. The company’s Maritime Intermodal subdivision will also be based at the site.

Regular services began on 7 January with trains from the Port of Felixstowe on Tuesdays to Saturdays. These depart Felixstowe at 08.00 and arrive at EMG at 17.20, returning at 20.50 to arrive at the port at 02.00. The new service is Maritime Intermodal’s seventh daily rail freight service. As the operation expands trains will also be received from London Gateway, the Port of Southampton and from the Continent via the Channel Tunnel.
