First tram runs on WMM Wolverhampton extension

Opening expected in June

The first working of a tram over the new Wolverhampton City Centre extension took place overnight on 3rd April. Flanked by a team of engineers, one of the new fleet of CAF Urbos 100 trams, No 42, made its way slowly from the Royal tram stop and used the new junction at Bilston Street to reach the terminus at Wolverhampton Railway Station. When the extension is officially opened, now stated to be ‘later this June’, it is expected that alternate workings will serve both the present terminus at St George’s, which is more central for shoppers, and the railway station.  An intermediate tram stop on the new extension at Pipers Row will provide an interchange with local bus services.
