Roger Ford’s article about the new South Western franchise (‘Informed Sources’, May issue) included a text box describing the future station stop requirements for trains, which (at 45 seconds maximum) seem relatively onerous. As we at the Railway Consultancy have been undertaking operational research in this area on a worldwide basis for 25 years, with colleagues at Imperial College, I thought I would check what is actually possible.
