FUNDING HAS been secured from the Government’s Local Growth Fund for the £82 million upgrade of the city’s station. A planning application is due to be submitted to Coventry City Council later this year. The council is working with Network Rail, Virgin Trains and other operators, Transport for West Midlands and other stakeholders to deliver the improvements.
The scheme is planned to include creation of a second footbridge to connect all four platforms, extension of platforms, a second station entrance onto Warwick Road and a multi-storey car park for 644 vehicles. A new platform is to be built for the shuttle to Nuneaton, enabling frequency to be increased from hourly to half-hourly. A bus interchange will also be built, connected to the station building via a new access tunnel under Warwick Road.
Alongside Local Growth Fund investment, the project has received funding from the Department for Transport and some borrowing, with funding also being requested from the West Midlands Combined Authority Devolution Deal.
