Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced a target to grow rail freight by at least 75% by 2050.

Described as an ‘ambitious plan’, Mr Harper says the target will encourage private sector investment in projects to grow rail freight volumes. He also claimed that funds could be released by the cancellation of High Speed 2 phases 2a/b for freight projects such as the Ely Area Capacity Enhancement Scheme. However, as individual projects are funded based on their own business cases rather than other projects, freight enhancements must still pass appraisal processes before securing funding.
