The opening of the new station at Headbolt Lane on 5 October also marked the entry into passenger service of the UK’s first ‘all-electric, battery-powered passenger fleet’, with the Stadler Class 777/1 units carrying their first passengers. At the same time, Northern’s local services from Wigan also switched to terminating at the new station, having temporarily terminated at Rainford while construction work took place.
