A NEW report produced by the rail industry sets out the case for further electrification schemes. Entitled ‘Why rail electrification?’, the report was set to be launched by the Railway Industry Association as Modern Railways went to press.
The report seeks to explain why electrification is a future-proofed technology which offers significant benefits. It also highlights the carbon payback period of electrification, how wiring schemes are needed to support an increase in electric rail freight (see also p75, last month), and how UK rail has a poor carbon record compared with other railways.
