As you may have noticed, Mr Walmsley and I are a pair of old curmudgeons when it comes to ‘innovation’. Our problem is that we have been around for a while and remember stuff. Mr Walmsley has even sat on working groups responsible for funding ‘innovation’ schemes: that experience has made him even more curmudgeonly than me (and that’s saying something – Ed).

On 17 June the Department for Transport and Innovate UK announced the latest round of ‘innovation’ funding, with £9.4 million shared between 25 projects under the 2020 ‘First of a Kind’ competition. The aim of the competition is to ‘bring new technology onto the railways to make them cleaner, greener and safer, as the UK leads the way to net zero carbon emissions’.
