A NEW half-hourly service between Stratford and Meridian Water was introduced on 9 September by Greater Anglia.
The new service utilises a 5.5km-long third track built by Network Rail and contractor Volker Fitzpatrick as part of the Lee Valley Rail Programme, along with new platforms at Tottenham Hale and Northumberland Park. The new Meridian Water station opened on 3 June, replacing the adjacent Angel Road station which closed at the same time.
Meridian Water is at the heart of a £6 billion development led by Enfield Council, which is planned to see 10,000 new homes built in the area. In August the Government confirmed £156 million would be made available to the Council through the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF), with the council promising delivery of a ‘high frequency rail service’ to the station by 2023. It said a new track would be built between Tottenham Hale and Meridian Water along with a fourth platform at the new station, while the centrepiece of the new infrastructure would be an east-west boulevard transporting pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles from the station through the development site into the Lee Valley Park and beyond.
Asked about the HIF funding, a Network Rail spokesperson said: ‘Having recently delivered a brand new station on behalf of Enfield Council for the Meridian Water development, we welcome discussions with those wishing to invest in and help build a railway fit for the future. We are continuing to hold discussions with Enfield Council to look at their aspirations for more services and potential options to support running more trains between Meridian Water and London.’
