Network Rail has commissioned signalling on the £116 million Levenmouth Rail Link project, giving the green light for ScotRail to start training drivers between Thornton junction and Leven.
The six-mile-long, double track branch is being electrified although initial operation will be by diesel trains. Two new stations are being built at Cameron Bridge and the terminus at Leven.
Signalling will be controlled from the Edinburgh signalling centre: there are 15 signals, 22 axle counters, three sets of points and 21 location cabinets on the branch.
Services are due to start this summer, although no start date has been confirmed.
