Mace and Dragados are to build High Speed 2’s Birmingham Curzon Street station in a deal worth up to £570 million.
The two-stage contract starts with detailed design, followed by construction. Environmentally friendly technologies will be used including rainwater capture and more than 2,800 square metres of solar panels on the platform canopies. Mace and Dragados are delivering HS2’s Euston terminus and have worked on projects including the Birmingham New Street refurbishment and Spain’s high-speed rail network stations at Madrid Atocha and Barcenlona Sants.
High Speed 2 worked with WSP and Grimshaw Architects LLP on Curzon Street’s design, which it says is inspired by arched structures built in the Victorian era. When open, it will be served by up to nine high-speed trains an hour as well as the Midland Metro which will run alongside and underneath the station. Conventional rail services can be accessed at nearby Moor Street station.
