MIDLANDS CONNECT has set out plans for a £3.5 billion programme of major projects, branded ‘Midlands Engine Rail’.

It says the programme includes and builds on the flagship Midlands Rail Hub scheme, which was submitted to Government in June (p12, August issue).

The programme would increase capacity and create space for 736 more passenger trains on the network each day. Existing services would be improved in speed and frequency along with the introduction of new direct services, such as from Leicester to both Leeds and Coventry. The programme incorporates plans to introduce new conventional-compatible services into Nottingham and Leicester aligned with HS2 (page 9). The project as a whole would be delivered in stages from 2022 to the completion of HS2 Phase Two.
