Birmingham New Street’s long-planned signalling upgrade has been completed with installation of 64 LED colour light signals at the station, along with 60 axle counters.
More than 230 miles of cabling has been laid to connect the signals and associated equipment, with ten ancillary building constructed too.
Control is initially from Birmingham New Street Power Signal Box, but from the beginning of 2023 is expected to transfer to the West Midlands Signalling Centre in Saltley.
The milestone is amongst the biggest on a regional signalling upgrade which has been taking place since 2005: a series of platform closures have been needed to allow the resignalling to take place at the station.
