NORTH WALES SIGNALLING COMMISSIONED

RHODRI CLARK reports on a major upgrade to the railway west of Chester

Network Rail commissioned new signalling on the eastern section of the North Wales Coast main line during a blockade on the weekend of 24 and 25 March. Control transferred to the Wales Rail Operating Centre (ROC) in Cardiff.

Resignalling was the largest single element of the North Wales Railway Upgrade Project, accounting for approximately half of the £50 million investment. With 99 Signalling Equivalent Units (SEUs) installed, the cost per SEU would appear to be about £250,000. Network Rail will provide the exact figure when the project is completed in the summer.
