There is something special about long journeys on our great main lines. The trainshed at King’s Cross echoes to the history of long-distance travel down the years, with the new western concourse marking the modern advancement to go with it.

The East Coast main line is changing, with new trains and infrastructure both coming on stream. My trip is to herald the introduction of LNER’s new Azuma trains on services to Aberdeen. With only one diagram initially changing from HST to Azuma, there was the chance to compare the old and the new, although by the time you’re reading this LNER’s HSTs will be but a memory. Fittingly, the operator planned a four-day railtour using a set re-liveried into the classic blue and grey to mark their passing.
