Passenger services on the Northumberland line between Ashington and Newcastle will start in summer 2024, according to Transport Secretary Mark Harper.
Restoration of passenger services was planned for 2023, with new stations at Ashington, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside, Newsham, Seaton Delaval and Northumberland Park, supported by a successful Restoring your Railways fund bid.
Journey times from Ashington to Newcastle will be halved to 35 minutes, with trains operated by Northern.
All 20 drivers required by Northern to operate the service are undergoing training.
