Railway pensions are a thorny issue. When the railways were nationalised, British Rail had a reputable pensions scheme supporting retired staff, with the government, owner of the railways, standing behind it. With privatisation, this arrangement continued, with the private sector train operating companies (TOCs) paying into the scheme on behalf of their employees.
