Retired railway manager THEO STEEL reviews financial performance of train operators and regional growth in 2016/17

The profitability of train operators continues to vary widely. The overall conclusion is that the position was held in 2016/17, despite a deterioration in London and South East growth; 2017/18 will be more interesting!

The Office of Rail and Road statistics for 2016/17 show fares income was up marginally at £9.5 billion (£9.4 billion the previous year), with government support steady at £3.4 billion. There were progressive reductions in year-on-year growth, with the issues mostly focused on London and the South East. The figures are as normalised by ORR.
