Rail freight recovers beyond pre-pandemic levels

Rail freight continues to grow, with the latest statistics from the Office of Rail and Road showing both the amount of freight moved and volume carried was higher in 2021/22 than before the pandemic in 2019/20.

A total of 16.87 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) was moved in 2021/22, an 11.3% rise over the previous year and 1.8% higher than in 2019/20. Volumes rose by 13.5% year on year to 78 million tonnes carried, an increase of 8% compared to two years before.
