TfW unveils CAF ‘197s’

Transport for Wales has officially launched its new CAF Class 197 DMUs, which will be introduced into passenger service in North Wales before the end of the year.

The 77-strong fleet will be the mainstay of inter-urban and long-distance services for TfW, and will enable the introduction of faster and more frequent services.

The fleet comprises 51x2-car and 26x3-car units, all assembled by CAF at its factory at Newport. Of the two-car units, 21 will be fitted with European Train Control System and will form a dedicated sub-fleet for use on the Cambrian line, while 14 of the three-car sets will have First Class, the remaining units all being Standard Class only.

TfW promises features including leather seats, modern air conditioning systems, wider doors and customer information screens, as well as electronic charging points and disability features for those with limited mobility.
