Third track alliance awarded

BALFOUR BEATTY, TSO and SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business have been awarded a 10-year contract by Network Rail’s Infrastructure Projects arm to deliver track upgrade works on Network Rail’s London North Western and London North Eastern and East Midlands Routes. The deal is worth an estimated £1.5 billion and comprises an initial five-year period with the option to extend. This is the third and final such deal awarded by Network Rail under three geographically-focused alliances.

Babcock Rail, Arup and Arcadis had already been confirmed as preferred bidder for Scotland, while Colas Rail and Aecom had been selected for the South region. The alliances will be responsible for work including track, points and associated overhead lines and signalling.

Under NR Chief Executive Andrew Haines’ restructuring plans, IP is to be abolished, with its functions devolved into 13 Routes. NR says this restructuring will not impact the frameworks and contracts committed to by the current organisation.
