Network Rail and 2Excel have worked together to transform the way the railway can assess the risk from ash dieback and other tree-related diseases and, in so doing, reduce the risk of major incidents and accidents involving falling trees. There are three million ash trees on the NR estate and 90% of these are expected to succumb to the disease. Without intervention, the rate of incidents involving diseased trees will increase significantly, resulting in more major incidents involving trees on critical infrastructure. There will be either a significant impact in cost and/or a significant impact in train performance and safety.
