Has anyone noticed the preparation is well underway for bringing the UK railway back into public ownership? The Rail Delivery Group’s new initiative is on
‘In Partnership for Britain’s Prosperity’, the new publication from the Rail Delivery Group, would look great on one of those old Soviet-style posters: determined women in headscarves against the sunset wield iPads showing meaningless commitments.
The pamphlet is surely a rallying-cry for the Department for Transport.
It is increasingly obvious that the DfT is undertaking preparations for nationalisation of the railways. The Department will at last be able to take the credit for micro-managing the railway after years of telling private managers exactly what they have to do, then pretending they had nothing to do with it when it all goes bogies-up.
NETWORK RAIL
Network Rail is already a nationalised business, and behaves accordingly.
It works to a five-year plan, but when it runs out of money it either gets more or cancels work, all with total impunity. Open the company’s website and the banner you see is ‘We own and operate the railway infrastructure in England, Wales and Scotland on behalf of the nation’. No doubts there then.
