Decarbonisation is a very topical issue and remains so despite the challenges of coronavirus. We have seen several significant developments this year, most notably the publication of Network Rail’s Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy (TDNS – pp12-13, October issue) and the Scottish Government’s own decarbonisation plan for rail. If the ambition of zero carbon by 2050 is to be achieved there is no time to waste, and now is the time to be discussing these issues and taking key decisions.

The Railway Industry Association’s Unlocking Innovation webinars during October examined these topical issues, with sessions focusing on electrification, rolling stock and operations. The four webinars replaced an in-person event and were followed on Friday 23 October by this magazine’s Railway Industry Innovation Awards, detailed elsewhere in this publication.
