SOUTH YORKSHIRE Passenger Transport Executive has appointed VolkerRail to carry out the second phase of rail replacement on the Supertram network in Sheffield.
The work will cover replacement of 11.5km of rail and starts this year, taking place in stages, mainly between May and September, until 2020. SYPTE says the work this year will focus on the section between Middlewood and Hillsborough, and in the Gleadless – Birley area.
VolkerRail was selected following a tendering process, having already carried out the first phase of the Supertram rail replacement scheme between 2013 and 2015. British Steel has again been appointed supplier for the rail in a separate £1 million contract.
