Passengers want a reliable railway. That fact is beyond dispute; the Transport Focus National Rail Passenger Survey for autumn 2019, published in January, reinforced this message once again.
Just a few days before those results were released, representatives from across the industry gathered in London for the Golden Whistles awards, which celebrate the achievements of those who are running the best-performing railways. After the challenges of the May 2018 timetable change, which affected many operators’ performance in that year, 2019 was a year of recovery, and while there were significant variations some notable improvements were recorded.
