CRAWFORD STRENGTHENED

Ian Lothian

Precautionary measures: following on from the problems at Lamington Viaduct in 2015, work was carried out recently at Crawford Viaduct to strengthen the north side defence and ensure there was no scouring affecting the central piers. Where the north side has been built up can be seen on the left of the picture and a weight limit of three tonnes has been put on any traffic using the farm track that passes under the structure. The left hand pier now has both a yellow and a red band painted onto the stonework. If the water level rises and reaches the yellow mark, caution has to be exercised and a speed restriction enforced. If the water level reaches the red marker, traffic over the viaduct has to be suspended.
