COMPETITION BREEDS SATISFACTION

I note that Rob McIntosh (‘Forum’, last month) has quite rightly championed the hard work undertaken by many across the industry in delivering services for passengers.

He is correct in that the recent survey results from Transport Focus which rated East Coast operators Grand Central, Hull Trains and Virgin Trains East Coast the best in the country certainly did not happen by accident. They happened because the three compete for their passengers in a dynamic market environment, offering choice and value for money, something currently missing from the rest of the rail network. As in all industries, once competitive pressure is applied standards improve, and it’s time this simple truth was allowed to establish itself elsewhere on the network for the benefit of all, passengers and the taxpayer alike.
