PLANNING PERMISSION has been granted for a new station at Maghull North on the Ormskirk branch of Merseyrail’s Northern line.

The £13 million scheme is being funded through the Government’s local growth fund, Merseytravel and the Homes and Communities Association, which currently owns the land on which the station will be built. An adjacent housing development will include 370 homes, with more planned for the area in the near future. The station will also offer relief for the existing Maghull station, which is the busiest on the branch and whose car park is currently operating at a 95% occupancy rate.

Two 125-metre long platforms, a staffed station building and ticket office, passenger waiting facilities, step-free access to both platforms and a 156-space car park are planned at the site. Construction work is due to start in August 2017, with opening planned for May 2018. It is predicted that the station will deliver 363,000 additional train journeys per annum by 2018.
