HS2 launches second Long Itchington Wood bore

Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Dorothy started its second drive on High Speed 2’s Long Itchington Wood tunnel on 24 November.

The machine had previously completed a one-mile drive on the first bore in July, and has been returned to the start site to begin the drive of the second bore. It will be the first twin tunnel to be completed on the railway.

Work on the tunnel started in December 2021, with the 500,000 tonnes of mudstone and soil excavated transported by a 254-metre-long conveyor to be treated and reused on the railway as embankment material.
