High Speed 2 is testing a dual-fuel piling rig which uses diesel/biofuels mixed with hydrogen. It is said to cut fuel use and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Four 30-metre-deep piles were drilled on a site in London following successful yard trials. The machine was modernised by ULEMCo and Cementation Skanska, working with the Business Research Establishment and funded through the BEIS Phase 1 Red Diesel Replacement competition.
The rig is one of a series of initiatives being undertaken by High Speed 2 in its commitment to achieving completely diesel-free sites by 2019: 19 sites already operate without diesel plant and machinery.
