TONY MILES reports on the remodelling of Liverpool Lime Street station

Liverpool Lime Street station reopened on 23 October after the completion of a 23-day project to begin the remodelling of the station, a key part of the Great North Rail Project. The renovation is said to be the biggest engineering upgrade of the city’s station since it opened in 1836.

Around 20,000 people use the station during the morning rush hour. Passenger numbers are expected to double by 2043: the project is designed to provide extra capacity to help accommodate this.

In the 2017 autumn blockade, two new platforms were created in the space between the current platforms 7 and 8, which was previously used as a cab road and taxi rank and until recently housed the Virgin Trains First Class lounge. Track at the station throat has been remodelled to provide a connection into the new platforms; the new platform 8 will be commissioned over Christmas followed by platform 7 in summer 2018. At the same time, almost 2,000m of track was replaced and other platforms were redesigned and lengthened.
