Transport for Wales Rail intends to operate three pairs of services between Holyhead and Cardiff each weekday with Mk 4 sets from September. The trains are due to feature a restaurant service from 20 September.
When TfW Rail’s predecessor signed the Wales and Borders franchise in June 2018, one of the commitments was to operate three loco-hauled services per direction between Holyhead and Cardiff. The Mk 4s were due to replace Mk 3s in December 2019. Following setbacks, including the impact of Covid-19 on crew training, on 7 June 2021 the first Mk 4 set commenced operating a morning service to Cardiff and evening return service.
The reduction of the Covid-19 alert level to zero in Wales on 7 August gave TfW Rail the certainty it needed to gear up for the restaurant service’s launch. TfW aims to provide a ‘fine dining experience’ on all Mk 4 workings between North and Sou…
