Vicki Pipe's new Modern Railways column

Well-known railway author Vicki Pipe has joined the Modern Railways team, writing a new monthly column, ‘Community Connections’. This new feature launches with the October 2021 issue of the magazine.

Vicki has travelled extensively by rail throughout the UK and Ireland, most notably as part of the All The Stations projects. Her first book, The Railway Adventures, was co-authored in 2018, and quickly became an Amazon Best Seller. In 2020, she published her second book, Great British Railways: 50 Things to See and Do.

Vicki’s interest in railways is vast, but her curiosity lays with the stories of people, places, social change, and how public transport has altered our sense of space and surroundings. Her ‘Community Connections’ column will shine the spotlight on the work of community rail organisations across the country, highlighting the many and varied activities they undertake to involve local communities in the railway and have a positive impact on the areas it serves.

In her first column, Vicki samples one of the Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership’s Bucket & Spade trains on the Sunshine Coast line, part of Community Rail Network’s #DaysOutByRail initiative. She also visits some of the other projects the CRP is working on, including the lovingly curated gardens at Alresford station. Future columns will feature a range of projects spread across the country.

We are delighted Vicki has joined the Modern Railways team and look forward to reading more about the valuable work carried out by community rail organisations in the coming months.
