BAKERLOO EXTENSION SAFEGUARDED

LAND FOR a future extension of the Bakerloo Line from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham has been safeguarded, as Transport for London published the outcome of a consultation showing support for the extension.

An extension of around 9km is proposed from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham, serving New Cross Gate and two new stations on the Old Kent Road. A further extension to take over the Hayes branch from national rail services has also been mooted and was broadly supported in the consultation.

TfL presented a report on the Bakerloo Line Upgrade & Extension (BLUE) programme to its Programmes and Investment Committee on 11 December. The report highlights the ‘essential introduction’ of new trains to replace London Underground’s ‘oldest and ailing fleet’, referencing the 1972 stock trains currently used on the line. The report says new rolling stock is a prerequisite to an extension due to the requirement for additional trains to serve an extended route, which would need to be compatible with the trains on the rest of the line. TfL has an option in its contract with Siemens for new Piccadilly Line trains to order a similar fleet for the Bakerloo.
