Network Rail’s curious geography

‘NETWORK RAIL is apologising to local businesses and motorists for a further delay in reopening Cottingham Road bridge.

‘The bridge has been closed to motorists since January to allow Network Rail engineers to raise the bridge to allow for the safe clearance of overhead line equipment. This work is part of the Midland Main Line Upgrade, which will see the line electrified from London to Bedford via Kettering and Corby.’ 25 September press release

BARLOW’SBIRTHDAY

Towering achievement: as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of St Pancras (marked in a feature in last month’s Modern Railways), HS1 unveiled this birthday cake at the terminus. On the bottom tier are the beer vaults and the Betjeman statue, then the Channel Tunnel, the trademark Gothic revival arches and filigree metalwork, and finally the lovers statue and Eiffel Tower on the top deck.
