Derby and the railways have a long association. The city remains at the heart of the UK rail industry and its station sits at an important crossroads in the network.

The basic layout around the station is unchanged since 1840.

The last major resignalling took place during the 1960s, meaning the equipment in Derby Power Signal Box (PSB) is nearing the end of its operational life. This provided scope for Network Rail to develop a more extensive programme of improvements, including updating the track layout around the station to better suit modern operations.
