PLANS TO create a metro-style service around Exeter took a step forward in January with Devon County Council approval, subject to funding, of a £16 million scheme to build a new station on the main line south of Exeter St Thomas to serve Marsh Barton. The station proposal was given the green light in 2015 but subsequent changes to Network Rail design standards, principally concerning the design of access ramps, led to the project stalling.
The station has now been redesigned; it will have two platforms of 124-metre length and be located on a site adjacent to an energy from waste plant beside the line. Half-hourly trains running between Exmouth and Torbay will call at the new station, which will serve not only the nearby industrial estate but also the Alphington district of the city and areas earmarked for new housing.
