Edinburgh Waverley masterplan

CONCEPT DESIGNS for the Edinburgh Waverley masterplan include a new mezzanine concourse across the whole station and extensions to seven platforms.

The plans have been revealed by Network Rail, the Scottish Government and City of Edinburgh Council, with the design team led by Arup. Platforms 1, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18 and 20 are proposed to be extended, which will reduce the size of the passenger concourse. To compensate for this, a southern ‘old town’ mezzanine concourse would be connected by two bridges to a northern ‘new town’ mezzanine concourse, providing fully accessible station entrances. As this requires greater headroom, the current roof would either need to be raised by two metres over the mezzanine areas or replaced, while the western ramps would also be removed.

The concept design follows a public consultation held last year, with the masterplan having been launched in 2018. Further technical and engineering studies will follow to develop the plan and in particular identify the most appropriate roof solution.
