First ‘555’ delivered for Tyne and Wear Metro

Training starts on new units

The first Stadler Class 555 EMU for the Tyne and Wear Metro has been delivered to Gosforth Depot from Switzerland via the Channel Tunnel.

No 555003 is the first of 46 trains being delivered for the Metro, and will undergo testing and driver training before entering service in the autumn. The new trains programme is costing £362 million.

Stadler Project Manager Adrian Wetter said: ‘The arrival of the first train in Newcastle is a massive milestone, bringing the project to manufacture and supply 46 new trains one step closer to fruition. These trains are technologically sophisticated, designed for passenger comfort and will dramatically improve the travel experience. “We are pleased to continue working with Nexus on the next stage, which is a comprehensive programme of testing to ensure that the trains meet industry safety standards before they are entered into commercial service.’

The fleet is expected to be fully in service by 2025, replacing the existing trains which are now up to 43 years old.
