Hitachi staff maintaining Great Western Railway Class 800/802 Intercity Express Trains have agreed two-year pay deal – but counterparts on London North Eastern Railway are remain in dispute.

A deal worth 6% of pay plus a £1,250 payment in the first year backdated to 1 April 2023 and a 5.2% rise from 1 April has been agreed by GWR staff, but Unite says LNER staff have not been offered the same deal.

RMT members working for Hitachi went on strike between 26 January and 1 February at Bounds Green, Craigentinny and Doncaster depots. That union says it has ‘carried out a risk assessment of the safety regime of Hitachi in the event of a strike and found it is not up to standard and poses risks to the travelling public.’

Hitachi said it was ‘disappointed’ in the strike action and that it believed its pay offer was ‘fair and highly competitive’.
